1.Look in your newspaper or on the Internet to find out when you can expect a full moon. From your observatory, watch the full moon rise. In your notebook, record the date, time, and azimuth of the rising Moon.

2.When weather permits, repeat this experiment at the full moon of each lunar cycle for at least a year. Does the full moon always rise in the same place on the horizon every month? If it doesn’t, in what month or months does the Moon rise in the southeast and set in the southwest? In what month or months does the Moon rise in the northeast and set in the northwest?

THE HARVEST MOON

An equinox occurs when the Sun is directly above Earth’s equator. There are two equinoxes each year. The vernal (spring) equinox occurs on or about March 21; the autumnal (fall) equinox occurs on or about September 21. The full moon that rises closest to the fall equinox is called a harvest moon. It is called a harvest moon because the Moon rises shortly before or after sunset for several days around the time of the full moon. As a result, farmers have more light than usual in the early evenings, so they can harvest their crops before frost and cold weather arrive.
